Berlin reports Italian transport Minas carrying 1,000 troops and gold was sunk by a German U boat with only two survivors. Seven ships were sunk in a single day, including Dutch vessels, in intensified submarine warfare near the western approaches to the English Channel.
Washington officials report the heavy destruction of Dutch shipping by German submarines threatens to provoke a break in diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Germany. Netherlands protests have grown as new attacks spark popular anger and pressure on The Hague to act.
Two vessels carrying Americans were sunk by German submarines as consuls reported to the State Department. The Skrim, a Norwegian steamer, was sunk by bombs after warning. 14 crew were rescued after 20 hours at sea. The Blenheim, a Norwegian bark, was sunk by shell fire after the crew abandoned ship. all aboard landed safely in Baltimore Ireland. The sole American aboard was Solomon Troiche, a Porto Rican, whose parents live in San Francisco.
The Eighth Infantry National Guard of Pennsylvania returning from a Mexican border assignment was at Columbus Ohio at noon today. Officials could not confirm an exact arrival time in Harrisburg due to traffic, but expected to reach Monday night. The regiment comprises companies from York Tamaqua Chambersburg Harrisburg Mahanoy City Huntingdon Carlisle Pottsville Bedford and Lewistown.
