By a 3 to 2 vote the city council dismissed W. Grant Forrer as superintendent of parks. The vote occurred as playground children crowded the Courthouse rotunda and chanted We want Forrer. The action followed the passage of the ripper resolution and drew a lengthy explanation from Commissioner Taylor.
Warren H. Manning writes to Commissioner M Harvey Taylor stating his desire to serve Harrisburg through the park and city plan. He recalls a 1918 contract with the Park Board costing under $800 and threatens withdrawal if Forrer is dismissed. He argues Forrer’s expertise is essential, or Manning would hire Forrer to represent him at a higher cost.
Harrisburg will be without Warren H. Manning, landscape architectural engineer, in further park and playground development. Manning says he would withdraw from his contract if V Grant Ferrer is dismissed as park superintendent, as talks on the closing contract have dragged on for weeks. The city faces an unresolved stalemate and an unsettled park plan.
Chicago voters hear women cast ballots in the primary for aldermanic nominees with eight women candidates on the ballot. More than 700 women served as judges and clerks and watchers from clubs and organizations filled polling places. Marion Drake sought the progressive nomination to challenge Alderman Bath House John Coughlan in the First ward. Election officials expected 150000 to 75000 of 158000 registered voters to vote. In New York City, 4 percent more dependent families were recorded by the Charity Organizations Society, totaling 6767 families served last September, the most in 30 years.
The Pennsylvania Steel Company ordered 500 Steelton residents to vacate within 30 days to clear the lower West Side south of Trewick Street and Main to Locust for plant expansion. Fifty-one properties on Main, Myers, Christian, and adjacent blocks face clearance, uprooting foreign and Black families and other tenants with leases subject to notice.
A stove fire on the third floor of 418 Walnut Street injures Pat Burt 74. He is treated at Harrisburg Hospital as flames drive residents to a snow balcony to escape. The Demenoffs, with a child, are rescued with great peril as the building is enveloped in smoke and flames.
Rumors swirl in Steelton that Rev. N D Vukechivich pastor of St Nicholas Orthodox Church vanished after a past conflict with his congregation. A Dauphin County Court hearing is planned for early March.
President Wilson today received Colonel George W. Goethals with a full briefing on plans for a permanent Panama canal zone government set to take effect April 1 with Goethals as first governor. The White House meeting ran longer than scheduled.
Lieutenant Porte and Lieutenant Towers, slated pilots for the Rodman Wanamaker flying boat, arrived in New York for a conference with Wanamaker and Glenn Curtiss. Porte and Towers plan to inspect the craft at Curtiss’s Hammondsport lab and discuss the trans Atlantic project.
A severe snow and windstorm rages along the coast as British steamers Sachem and Riversdale ashore near Norfolk. Sachem lies on a treacherous bar two and a half miles from shore with crew aboard. Riversdale is farther up the beach with cargo lumber being thrown overboard and saved.
In El Paso to Juarez reports claim Scottish ranchman W. S. Benton was a Mexican citizen and held minor offices under Diaz. Chihuahua records are being searched while Washington seeks his body after a court martial execution. Villa receives telegrams from global correspondents seeking details of Benton’s death.
In Kearny New Jersey two Civil War veterans and lifelong friends died within hours of each other at the soldiers home morgue. John DeForrest 70 nursing service in four years and Michael Clark 78 infantry veteran were united by DeForrest nursing Clark after Gettysburg wounds. Their close friendship began at Gettysburg in 1863 and endured to their deaths.
Mrs. Cynthia Buffumo testified that she did not confess to her husband’s murder alleging coercion by District Attorney Cole and Buffalo detectives. The trial proceeded before Judge Brown with the jury present. Cape Town Assembly moved to indemnify government acts under martial law, passing the second reading 95 to 11.
John A. Marshall an insurance man and frequent candidate will seek a Democratic nomination in the city district. His papers are filed and circulation starts. Jesse J. Lybarger also has ambitions but is discouraged. Ezra Early of Cleona has shown a tendency to run for the Legislature on the Democratic ticket in Lebanon.
Paris February 24. Forty thousand of the 225000 coal field miners in Southern France strike in response to leaders call protesting the Senate elimination of clauses in the underground workers pension bill.
In Albany a joint legislative session votes on the state treasurer selection to succeed the late John J. Kennedy. Democrats plan a coalition with Progressives to block a Republican. Progressive Homer D. Call and Republican William Archer are the rival candidates, with 101 votes needed.
Robert McCormick, president of the Harrisburg Bridge Company, urged the Public Service Commission to require toll-bridge operators to file rates so discounts cannot be hidden. He cites repeated requests for 10 percent reductions and argues published rates hide offers. The proposal, a new policy, will be reviewed at next week’s meeting, potentially affecting hundreds of firms. Seventeen March hearings are set, including city contracts with Pennsylvania Railroad and various utility rate cases in Camp Hill, Upper Allen and Swatara.
