Mining engineer T Ellsworth Davies reports Dauphin County coal fields valued near 117 million dollars. The current assessment is about 1 million, with residents predicting a lengthy court fight to secure higher, fair value.
Local markets expect milk to fall one cent per quart with Philadelphia dealers yesterday agreeing on a penny per quart reduction to retail customers. The change flowed through to farmers though a milk glut noted in the winter buildup and higher wartime prices.
County Commissioners fixed the 1919 tax rate. Coal land assessments after court appeals may boost the treasury but final valuation determines tax due. Each extra $1 million in assessed county property adds $4,500. $10 million adds $45,000. $50 million adds $225,000. Officials say higher valuations may enable future rate reductions to fund roads and bridges. Existing bridges and road work face delays due to high labor and material costs.

The surgeon of the Civil War earned a congressional medal of honor and fought for women dress reform and suffrage. She wore male attire and served as a surgeon in battle. Born Oswego New York 1832.
Clarence EK Coles, an undertaker in Boas and Cowden streets, was overwhelmed by reports of his death after a bout with grip. He told reporters he is alive, not dead, and has not arranged his funeral as yet.
George Washington marks his birthday quietly at 1225 Cumberland Street Harrisburg. The note adds no parade or business closings and mentions no public celebration as he prepares for his weekly wage.
Paris reports Premier Clemenceau is fatigued and will receive no one today. Doctors forbid talking and limit lung movement to aid a wound. morphine was suggested but rejected, causing a tense exchange with Dr Laubry who urged rest for Clemenceau’s chest. Alexandre Millerand visited noting the premier’s fatigue.
A small Polish garrison at Lemberg has repelled hostile efforts before the arrival of the inter allied mission. The presidential party joined soldiers and ship’s crew crowding into the old salt theater on the liner’s lower decks.
