Fire damages Newville merchant home and drug store
A morning blaze at J Clyde Swigert's High street home damaged the residence and lightly scorched R Brean Claudy's drug store. Mrs Swigert suffered severe burns while trying to save clothing. Special to The Telegraph Columbia Pa February 18 Lewis Bates an aged recluse was found dead in his two room home. Deputy Coroner Dr Strine and a physician said Bates had been dead about 24 hours. He left about 40000 in money and securities in a bank box and named George Buch Lititz as executor in a will. He was about 72, twice married, both wives dead, and collected old coins with valuables.
