Paris reports tension with the Central Powers rises as Ambassador Penfield may have acted on his own initiative. Americans in Austria warned to leave, with officials unsure if a break with Austria can be avoided. Unofficial reports say American sailors in Germany released.
Milk producers, retailers, and ice cream makers across Dauphin and Cumberland counties endorse city health chief Dr. Raunick's call for typhoid vaccination of all dairy contacts. Leaders plan early meetings to discuss safeguards and decisive steps to prevent a recurrence of last summer's epidemic.
Washington reports unofficial word Germany freed 72 American seamen held aboard the prize ship Yarrowdale. A note to Berlin was prepared for President Wilson but may be withheld if official confirmation comes. Cabinet discussed freight congestion and potential new U S actions to protect lives and property.
Washington, Feb 16. An inquiry was sent to Germany via the Spanish embassy in Berlin about the delay in the second trainload of former American officials from Germany to Switzerland. The train, carrying 86 former American consuls and families plus others, was to leave Munich early this week. Officials expect departure soon, though no definite time has been given.
The forecasts call for fair and warmer conditions tonight and Saturday with lows near 25 degrees. Central and eastern Pennsylvania may see mixed precipitation and stronger winds in the north. The Susquehanna River remains around 6.4 feet with no ice changes. a low 30s high and 20s low were recorded, normal highs are 30 degrees.
Probabilities favor the Sixth Pennsylvania Infantry and the Sixteenth Infantry joining the Wilson inaugural parade. The Sixth, from Philadelphia area, and the Sixteenth, from Erie Venango and Oil City, are under serious consideration. The Eighth from Harrisburg will not participate.
Harrisburg Hotel Company directors met to review plans for the Penn Harris Hotel with architects from Esenwein and Johnson and W L Stoddart New York. Specifications will be ready for contractor proposals within thirty days and no changes were announced. In a separate incident J J Lentz 50 of 310 Chestnut Street employed by City Highway Department was struck by a trolley in the Market Street subway suffered a fractured arm and scalp cuts taken to Harrisburg Hospital.
Today's tally adds four vessels to the submarine losses. Two British steamers the Longscar and the Greenland, plus a sailing vessel, account for 4640 tons. A trawler also went down in the latest attack.
Three U.S. cowboys Andrew Peterson Thurton Jenson and Hugh Acord were found slain three miles inside Mexico after being seized last Monday near Corner ranch. Army patrols led by Colonel J C Waterman investigated and debated crossing into Mexico as Lem Spillsbury and General Pershing's expedition team conducted the search for three days.

Governor Brumbaugh sent a letter urging a law requiring every automobile operator to demonstrate driving ability before licensing and to bar licensing for intoxicated drivers. The note asks Highway Commissioner Frank Black to pursue legislation for highway safety and property protection. Bishop McDevitt of Harrisburg diocese is confined to bed at 115 Pine Street with non serious illness. priest assignments in the diocese may be announced next week.
The British Admiralty ordered neutral ships from American ports to Europe to be inspected at Halifax, easing New York’s cargo congestion. Dutch and Scandinavian liners held by the blockade prepared to sail via the HALIFAX route, while the Tuscania with 14 cabin passengers departed for Glasgow.
One of the world’s largest open hearth furnaces is under construction at Central Iron and Steel Company. The 180 ton per heat furnace, plus rebuilt blast furnaces and extended gas producers, aims to boost output. A new 150 ton crane serves the increased activity. Paxton furnace No. 2 is being modernized. A Bethlehem Steel contract funds a 180 foot building to handle more business, with completion expected by May 1. The project, along with other improvements, will keep all local plants operating for the foreseeable future.
The Holy Name Society of St Francis church plans a St Patrick's Day observance on March 17 with a committee of German extraction to lead the celebration. President Bernard Schmidt will appoint a German majority to show the Irish a strong national display at the event.
