Washington reports on the California destruction and other ship losses indicate no overt act yet, but officials say war is a matter of time. The government will wait for undisputed evidence of rights violations before acting, with preparations hastening as expectations mount for further attacks.
The fate of James White, a Black man held with Elwood Wilson for shooting Officer Hipple last June, was turned over to the jury after four days of trial. District Attorney Stroup rejected a second degree plea as the Commonwealth pressed for first degree murder.
Un settled weather likely with snow and colder conditions tonight and Friday. Harrisburg area expected a low near 20 degrees with a river stage around 6.3 feet Friday morning. New York reports from cable sources show sixty one ships totaling about 200000 tons sunk since February 1. Among the victims are mostly British vessels with one American ship, the Housatonic, and the British liner California. The latest losses include the Turino and Hollinside with crews landed after sinking off the Scilly Islands.
Washington reports show 162 survivors and 41 missing from the California after a likely torpedo strike about 10 am Wednesday. New York cable adds 13 more missing names including Mrs E Smith and J W Alderson with several others listed from Canada and the United States.
Mrs. David Attig of 1815 Market street reported her cat Toodles missing after a night. The feline crept into a nearby moving picture theater through an exit and was found the next morning near Lenney theater. Toodles ate salmon, drank milk, and slept after being rescued.
The Harrisburg Telegraph raised weekly price to 10 cents on January 15 due to high newsprint costs. Despite the increase, the 15 day average net paid circulation shows 96.7 percent retained compared with 1916 annual average. Renewals from many who briefly paused subscriptions continue. The publishers applaud public support for a clean bright modern paper.
Driscoll of the New York Bureau of Municipal Research told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon that policing is degraded by political control. Ralph I. Deihl paying teller of East End Bank elected cashier of Hummelstown National Bank and will assume March 1. A Paxtang resident, he has been with East End since its May 6, 1903 opening and served the past seven years as paying teller. He is a Central High School 1899 graduate active in building associations and Allison Hill circles. The family will reside in Paxtang for now, then move to Hummelstown.
