Ensign Smucker Reported Dead in U S Service
News reached Rev. Dr. Clayton A. Smucker that Ensign Leroy D. Smucker had died in service. The submarine chaser No. 221 sent condolences, and Navy officials were asked for details. Smucker enlisted May 1917, trained at Norfolk, and served off England in dangerous areas while a Syracuse University junior and Central High School athlete.
