Major Charles B. Warren of the judge advocate general's department told district appeal boards of the draft system that exemptions rules call for proof and it is up to boards to see it presented. The opening session at the Capitol featured nine boards. William H. Ball acting for the governor and Adjutant General Stewart spoke. Warren noted the need for documented dependency proofs, raising questions on trust funds or gifts held by wives.
Chicago August 22 Consumers' Company a major retail coal dealer announced an immediate cut of one to one eighty cents per ton on soft coal in line with President Wilson price. Other dealers will match the reductions and Chicago's coal bill is projected to fall by thirty million dollars.
Contractor Bomgardner stopped riprapping on the river slope yesterday by order of City Commissioner Gross. The city council had planned funded completion and hopes remain to allow the contractor to proceed. The project has run for weeks, with ample stone and trained labor, awaiting a resolution to finish the remaining short section.
City commissioners school officials and other invited guests were treated to a dinner at the Reservoir Park cooking school. Miss Anna Bender, the instructor, led a large class of girls who prepared the entire menu as part of their domestic science course.
Included in petitions this afternoon were Harry A. Boyer seeking reelection as city school director Patrick J Kenny for mayor James B Deshong for Twelfth ward alderman on the Republican ticket and C J House-Sere for Tenth ward alderman. A Harrisburg Baking Company truck and a touring car collided at Fourth and Market streets causing slight damage to both.
Twelve more men, passing physically and claiming no exemption, were added to the new National Army list by draft exemption boards in the first and third county divisions. Only that number was obtained from fifty two examined. Next Tuesday the first district board will begin examining 400 men, calling 100 daily in specified morning and afternoon slots. About one hundred of the 255 men for the second district quota have been accepted and will claim no exemption.
Washington August 22 The Department of Agriculture started the machinery for a nation wide census of the food supply. The survey covers one hundred foodstuffs and will map supplies on farms warehouses stores and in family larders. A preliminary census of eighteen principal commodities will be taken next month with a full survey after harvest.
As hours remain before the primary filings, numerous city and county hopefuls submit petitions in the Harrisburg area. Names include Edward L. Rinkenbach, J. L. Yoder, William H. Lynch, E. Z. Gross, Charles C. Steiner, James C. Thompson, Thomas P. Moran, B. J. H. Douglass, and J. F. Ommert. Cameron Baer announces a September 1 outing for Masonic Home children. Harrisburg Motor Club to take orphans to Hershey Park on August 29.
