German forces retreat under heavy Allied pressure across Picardy. 24 000 prisoners taken as Von Hutier withdraws toward Noyon leaving material behind. Montdidier position along the Roye road becomes precarious with Hun rear guards fighting hard.
London dispatches say the allied advance on the Picardy front continues with Montdidier captured after French forces encircled the town. British troops push toward Chaulnes and Lihons while Morlancourt falls with American units aiding the assault.
In France August 10 the British report widespread enemy retreat along the Picardy front with heavy pressure in the center. Allied forces say German divisional headquarters and staff were captured, with tanks seen east of Meharicourt and two new German divisions engaged. Prisoners indicate potential for heavier fighting ahead.
London August 10 The Pall Mall Gazette reports the Picardy battle spreading south of Arras with heavy fighting this morning. Allies push forward and take large numbers of prisoners as progress continues in the battle area.
British aviators destroyed or forced down 65 German aircraft during the August 8 fighting as the allied offensive in Picardy opened. Fifty British machines are reported missing with losses mainly from ground fire.
General March warns reporters that the Franco British drive in Picardy forces the enemy into a worsening position and the Allied line from Rheims to Flanders must be stretched to sustain pressure. He notes the war is not over and urges continuing efforts with Marshal Foch advocating relentless action.
Penbrook youth Charles H Waltz named in today’s casualty lists as wounded in France with degree undetermined. He enlisted March 28 1917 and sailed for France in August, serving with Company L 9th Infantry. Previously a Rex garage machinist.
Harrisburg and Dauphin county draft boards announce the first regular quota for the 1918 class to move to Camp Lee Virginia during the five day period starting August 26. The six boards share a total quota of 156 men with more than fifty draftees expected from the 1918 class. Boards did not receive their quotas this morning.
New York reports that Clearing House banks and trust companies hold 40,839,380 in excess reserves over legal requirements, a drop of 14,392,810 from the previous week. It notes the week’s actual condition for the sector.
Washington Aug 10 The War Department considers having the Government select registrants under the next draft act instead of the registrant answering questions. Secretary Baker urged immediate passage of the bill raising age limits from 18 to 45 and proposed a question set to classify registrants. He argues the system would be fair since many men hesitate to claim exemptions they deserve and cites marriage as a factor.
A New York Times military analyst notes Germany has been crushed as a major offensive power. He asserts Germany will mostly defend and cannot plan large attacks, leaving Allied command with decisive planning ahead under General Foch until Germany surrenders or is destroyed.
London reports Bolshevik emissary M. Litvinoff placed under police supervision in reprisal for the arrest in Moscow of Robert H. B. Lockhart acting consul general and several British staff, with several French diplomats involved.
London August 10 A German destroyer was sunk eight miles off Zeebrugge yesterday probably by a British mine. The Admiralty said enemy mine sweepers off Zeebrugge were heavily bombarded by British aircraft.
Partial cloudiness tonight and Sunday with moderate temperatures noted for the Herrisburg vicinity.
Allied forces including American troops charged the Amiens Somme front, overcoming stiff resistance to seize Chipilly Spur and other positions between the Ancre and Somme. Tanks and heavy bombardment supported a 5 p.m. push, driving Germans toward Bray as Americans and allies advance.
London reports eleven German divisions crushed with no effective counter-attacks. American forces in Morlan court region unknown but advancing per Washington. Harrisburg sees a 10 percent wage hike at LaLance and Grosjean Mfg. Co. Collins to join Marines after last game for the Chicago Americans. French seize Saulchy and Davenescourt as fighting rages near Chipilly on the Somme.
