Tuskegee Army Air Field Ends Cadet Class Graduation

The Tuskegee Army Air Field near Tuskegee Alabama closed its history with the graduation of eight cadets and one second lieutenant on Saturday June 29. Marcus H. Ray civilian aid to the secretary of war delivered the main address at the Amphitheater. The total trained fliers since opening in 1941 reaches 992 with Second Lieutenant Claude A. Rowe Detroit Michigan receiving his pilot’s wings as the last graduate.

Negro Captain Commands M P Company in Italy

Leghorn Italy Captain sten ty T Morgan 745 Idlewood St Pittsburgh Penn named commanding officer of the 6th military police company activated under Peninsular Base Section Command. Morgan a veteran of the Italian campaign spent days in Naples selecting personnel from the Naples Air Forces General Depots 838th Engineer Aviation Battalion. The unit began 4 to 6 weeks training before duty in the Leghorn area. Morgan previously led the 4069 Se company and served with the 758th Tank Battalion which helped capture Voltri near Genoa. about Germans were captured and Morgan’s troops held the towns for two months until Allied officials arrived. Recent dependents join units under PES Command aboard the SS Thomas H Barry on June 9.

Beauty Parlor Opens in Forest City

Harriett Paulson opens an up to date beauty parlor in Forest City. The shop is modern in every respect and deserves support from the community. Mrs Philson, a native of Sellenboro North Carolina, graduated from Grahamtown high School in 1943 and has studied elsewhere. She is well qualified to do the work. More will be said about this new business in our next issue.

Gold Hill Sunday School Convention Meets In Harris

The Gold Hill Sunday School Convention gathered June 20 at Jerusalem Baptist Church with President Plato Bridges presiding. Minutes from the previous session were approved and committees formed for enrollment and finance. half the treasury will go to the annual convention. A busy program featured remarks by S. B. McKinney, Alfonso Bridges, and reports on church work and editor duties for the Harris Herald.

Medford Attends Testimonial Dinner in New York

Dr H T Medford Washington DC Secretary Treasurer of the Foreign Mission Department of the A M E Zion Church attended a testimonial dinner in honor of Dr Thomas A Donahue secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions. The event at Christ Church on June 20 included a commissioning service sending thirty missionaries and deaconesses to fields in Angola India Malaysia China Mexico Cuba Africa Brazil Peru and Uruguay under the Methodist Mission Board. The gathering drew representation from twenty colleges as well as the 125th New York Annual Conference meeting in Brooklyn. Bishop E B Watson and his wife were noted as recent mission field workers in West Africa.

Distinguished Career of the Rev. E. L. Goode

A sketch of Rev. E. L. Goode born in Rutherford County about 55 in length, noting his rise from youth at Doggetts Grove A. M. E. Zion to licensed preacher and his long pastorates. He studied at Livingstone College from 1907 to 1917 earning an A B degree, taught 18 years in Rutherford County, and supervised farms and land holdings including his mother’s farm until her death in 1982.

The Home Union Singing Convention met at Hopawell A M E Zion Church on June 29 and 30 with M R Robinson presiding. Reports came from Zion Hill Hopewell and Doggetts Grove as greetings and fundraising totaled over 17 dollars. Sunday featured a union Sunday School led by Goler Tarnis and the event closed with the benediction and singing God Be With You Till We Meet Again.

Dependents join servicemen in Mediterranean theater

In Leghorn Italy the army began transporting dependents overseas last May. Seven wives and three children of Black military personnel have arrived in the Mediterranean Theater. The number of Black troops in the theater totals 2,446 per latest Peninsular Base Section headquarters figures. The Tuskeegee pilot corps has graduated 983 to date, with the final count reaching 892 after nine join today. The 89th fighter squadron had its biggest day January 27, 1944 during the Italian campaign near Anzio and the 92nd fighter group scored a notable destroyer kill.
