South Texas Flax Crop Gains Ground in Local Agriculture
Flax growing successfully in South Texas passes trial and moves to full scale this season. The crop thrives as a winter plant sown in October or November and harvestable by May or June. In Taft district farmers plan to sow Indian dwarf flax, which yielded 12 to 18 bushels per acre last year and fetched about $18 to $27 per acre. Net gains exceed cotton due to low tilling, machine harvesting, and suitability for rootrot-infested land.
