South Texas flax crop gains foothold in regional agriculture

Flax thrives as a winter crop from October sowing to May harvest, expanding beyond traditional Minnesota and Pacific Northwest roots. In San Patricio and Taft districts, farmers plan thousands of acres of Indian dwarf flax, yielding 12 to 18 bushels per acre and net gains higher than cotton due to low tillage and machine harvesting. The crop also promises seed uses for linseed oil and potential future applications in paper and building board.
