State Official Refuses to Certify Either Candidate in 85th District
Austin bureau reports that the 85th district remains without a Democratic nominee as Secretary of State acting secretary Kirk Mallory declines to certify either Mrs. Lela Martin or Mourand after split certification by four county chairmen. The death of Rep. Tom Martin prompted the vacancy and two meetings produced inconsistent certifications. The likely outcome is a write-in campaign. Harry Davis Jr. had considered running but withdrew to back Mrs. Martin if certified. Also notices of visits, births, and local farming activity appear in the rest of the column.
