GM Fisher Body builds 125 mammoth planers for defense work
To relieve a machine tool bottleneck for the defense program the OPM contracted Fisher Body to manufacture 100 planers, later increased to 125, at Grand Rapids Michigan. The project used existing GM facilities and a coordinated effort with Detroit pattern shops, creating a large scale assembly line and delivering a completed planer ready for immediate OPM use to support national defense.
