Edgar Stieler Rites Held on Stieler Ranch

Kerr County resident Magor Steler 79 died November 11 at his Bear Creek home. Services were held in Comfort with burial on the Stieler ranch. Survived by his wife Anna Winkelmann daughter Poeggy and grandchild Warren of Harper. A conservationist, he promoted native grasses and wildlife, aided grain crop development, and in 1944 was cited by Gov. Coke Stevenson for war effort. He helped establish Kerr County Soil Conservation District and was named outstanding farmer rancher of Kerr. After death he cooperated with the Renner Foundation on diversified grazing programs.

One Year Extension of Antipoverty Program Voted by House

The House approved a one year extension of the antipoverty program authorizing 1.6 billion dollars for the next fiscal year amid hearings that revealed funds spent on agitators and subversive individuals. Senate counterpart approved 2.2 billion. after edits, spending trimmed to 1.6 billion with amendments to curb aid to demonstrators and unlawful acts. Texan votes split on the cuts and amendments.

St James Lutheran Women Meet November 16

The St James Lutheran Women met on Thursday November 16 opening with hymn For the Beauty of the Earth. A Thanksgiving meditation was given by Mrs Hubert Rahe and Mrs Victor Marshhall reported on a tour of Lutheran missions in Mexico with slides. Bible study led by WE Doerr focused on Jesus as King and Lord with cross and kingdom not of this world. Christmas meeting planned for December 2 at 2 pm with plans for program and refreshment committee listed.

Saint Anthony's Catholic Church Service Schedule

Pastor A. A. Gitter announces Masses for Sunday November 26 at 8 and 9:30. Eucharistic Day Closing at 2:00 p m. Friday December 1 Masses at 7:30 a m and 7:30 p m. Saturday December 2 Mass at 8:00 a m followed by 15 minutes of meditation. Open invitation to attend any service.

Harper locals report Mrs Bill Lea of Sanderson and her mother Mrs J J Rogers visited last week. Mr and Mrs John Reddick of Kerrville spent time with Mrs Meta Dittmar and Mrs Herbert Jones. Mrs Donnie Bode won a turkey at the American Legion turkey shoot Saturday. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Herman Oehler and family from Bryan and Mr and Mrs Jack McCowan and daughters from Austin. Attendees at the Sheep and Goat Raisers Ausbrary meeting in Junction on Saturday Nov 18 at Tsacks Restaurant included Mesd Harvey Stevens Clinton Brown BE Ro Brown Watkins Tarr Pat Rogers Wayne Rogers and Miss Mary Nell Tarr. Mrs Mack Scarborough, who spent weeks with her daughter Mrs Rex Fox in Eagle Pass, has returned to Harper.
