Soil and Water District Notes on Ranch Plans and Grass Growth
Gillespie County farmers report soil and water conservation efforts led by Mrs. J. Payton Barnes now in Houston. Her Kerrville highway farm will use root plowing and root raking to clear mesquite, then coastal bermudagrass sprigging. gullies will be reshaped and sprigged to bermuda grass to curb erosion. Fall deferment and rains have boosted native grasses like big bluestem and Indian grass, storing food for next spring. Otto Grena uses coastal bermuda pastures for summer grazing, with deep soil range sites also converted to bermuda to raise production while grazing is controlled.

Deer season may start later says Harper residents
Local residents and members of the Cherry Spring Game Protective Association prefer a November 23 start for deer hunting and bow season alignment with rifle season. They cite colder weather, bucks still roaming, and lawns needing time to stay alive. The group also notes the bow and arrow hunt should match the rifle season to avoid a handicap during early gunfire. A separate Sa San Angelo paper item mentions a 11pound 6-ounce radish record found near Kerrville, attributed to high powered fertilizer.
