The 1944 Official Catholic Directory reports 23 419 701 Catholics in the United States Alaska and Hawaii an increase of 474 454 from last year. It lists 98 dioceses and 20 archdioceses with Youngstown newly established. It notes 569 priest deaths and 25 chaplains detained by the enemy, plus 37 749 ordained clergy and 20 906 parishes and stations.
