Fire-Retardant Paint from Borax-Infused Linseed Oil

Experimental fire retardant paints developed at the U S Forest Products Laboratory Madison Wisconsin use lin seed oil with borax as a pigment additive. White lead borax formulations show interior humidity stability for 30 months though exterior use fails due to rain leaching. Titanium or zinc sulfide pigments also show fire resistance but cannot endure continuous high heat. The paint yellowing indoors may be reduced by vehicle changes and the approach remains in development with limited applicability where fire resistance outweighs other properties.
