Soil Conservation District's Growth and Community Support
The Gillespie District formed on October 23, 1947, with Arnold Rode and Herman Maner as supervisors. Aided by Soil Conservation Service technicians, the district expanded farm programs, field days, grass judging, seed planting, and equipment for reseeding pastures. Local merchants, churches, Chamber of Commerce, and civic groups boosted calendar distribution and public participation in soil stewardship. The district joined Hill Country and national associations, with Secretary Benson addressing 1954 conventions in New Orleans.
