Trophies awarded at Harper Lions Club youth rodeo with winners from Kerrville Medina Rocksprings Harper and Sonora. Engagement announced for Joan Beach of Junction to Elgin Lange of San Antonio. Fourteen Will Graduate Harper First Kindergarten Class

Fourteen boys and girls will graduate on Friday night May 9 from Harper Public School the first kindergarten class. The group of seven boys and seven girls studied under Mrs Dorothy Hornbeck who started the class last September with sessions three days weekly 8 30 to 11 a m It reconvened February 20 and will run through May 16 Mrs Hornbeck is wife of Rupert Hornbeck sixth grade teacher and director of the Harper high school band.

Tornado safety tips from DPS official Speir in Texas

Col. Wilson E Speir head of the Texas Department of Public Safety warns that April through June are peak tornado months with past figures of 13 48 and 2 percent. The DPS circular advises cellar or buried shelter with air outlets, moving at right angles to the path, seeking interior shelter in cities and avoiding large roofed spaces in schools. In homes heavy furniture may add protection and tornadoes typically affect a small zone.

McCamey Couple Sees Harper Area Fascinating Visit

Mr and Mrs James Gooten of McCamey Texas toured Harper and Lange's Mill Doss last Friday praising the area as more interesting than usual tourist sites. They suggested developing Lange's Mill into a major attraction with a lake from spring waters and admired Harper sights including the community park rodeo arena picnic area log cabin and the 1882 well rebuilt in 1954. The couple praised the Texas Hill Country scenery and outdoor beauty of Harper.

Kermit Klaehn Attends Cable Splicing School at A&M

Kermit Ho Klaehn of Harper, a cable splicer helper for Kerrville Telephone Co, is among 100 students at Texas A&M University in a three week Cable Splicing School run by Engineering Extension Services. The course covers identifying conductors, splicing prep, sealing procedures, sleeve forming, and joint wiping.

Malcolm Roger Marschall son of Mr and Mrs Victor Marschall of Harper is named on the University of Texas College of Engineering honor roll for the fall semester announced by Dean John J. McKetta. Stitchery Show at Hill Country Arts Foundation

The Hill Country Arts Foundation Ingram hosts a stitchery show from May 28 to June 8 in the Main Pavilion. Entries must be original pieces completed since June 1968, with three divisions stitchery applique and miniature. Craftsmen may enter up to three pieces not previously shown at the HCAF.

Local residents including Mr and Mrs Pete Casper visiting his sisters Mesdames Roy and Raymond Cottle last week. Calvin Tuckness of Austin spent the weekend with her parents Oren and Mrs Parker. Harper FFA Earns Fourth in State Range Pasture Contest

Harper FFA finishes fourth among over thirty teams at Stephensville state range and pasture event with 128 participants. Wayne Parker and Leo Heinemann lead Harper as top individual performers. Other Harper members include Brad Massey and Craig Lange. High teams include Hico, San Saba, Forestburg, and Stanton.

Friendly Sewing Circle Meets in Kramer Home

The Friendly Sewing Circle met at Mrs. Alfred Kramer’s home on Avril 23 and completed a club quilt. The April hostesses were Mrs. Alfred Kramer and Mrs. Paul Staudt. Seven members and two guests attended and were served sandwiches chips pie and coffee. The next meeting is June 25 at the Kramer home with Mrs. Christene Kramer as hostess and quilting on the agenda.

Birthday car mishap injures Melanie McMahn

Melanie McMahn daughter of Mr and Mrs Jim McMahn suffered a finger cut when she slammed a car door. She was taken to a doctor where several stitches were given on what was her fifth birthday anniversary.

Fourth Annual YF and FFA Rodeo in Harper

Harper hosts the fourth annual Young Farmers and FFA Rodeo at Community Park on Saturday May 10. A barbecue dinner starts at 6:00 pm with meals at 1.00 for adults and 0.75 for children 12 and under, sponsored by the 4H Club which will take 30 percent of proceeds. Rodeo events begin at 7:30 pm including bull riding bronco riding calf roping and wide cow riding along with pole bending and barrel racing. A Western dance with music follows at 9:30 pm and refreshments are provided by Harper homemakers.
