Capitol Hill action ends filibuster and tax battle
Last week on Capitol Hill the Senate filibuster ended amid a State's Rights Republican coalition. A rent control measure passed the House but faces Senate action while a DC sales tax defeat helps taxpayers nationwide. The House also approved a 70 Group Air Force bill outlining Army and Air Force composition. Secretary of Agriculture rejected a mohair program despite calls for aid, and a local note mentions a Junction boot repair shop and a Sunday Austin visit by Mr and Mrs Oliver Hopf.

Driver Training In High School Proves Popular
W A Cap Williamson of the Texas Automotive Dealers Association urged parent teacher associations to push driver training in every Texas city and town next semester. Since 1943 started in 1948, 586 schools offered driving courses or credit. The program has broad support from the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers and state safety groups. 1948 saw 13 courses offered by colleges with 282 teachers trained and 143 prospective teachers certified. Sometimes the program lacks full agency cooperation. Incidentals note a Brady visit by Miss Dorothy McDavid and local family ties, plus an LLano Fredericksburg ad.
