Coal Mines Hit New Safety Record in 1945
Bituminous coal mines in the United States posted a new safety record in 1945 with about 1.6 accidental deaths per million tons mined, less than half the rate twenty years earlier. The Bituminous Coal Institute credits extensive company investments in new machinery and improvements for the drop. A giant motor drives a fan exhausting 450000 cubic feet of air per minute to keep air pure after a recent mine explosion, aiding 250 miners who escaped via a special shaft.
