Gillespie County Soil Conservation District News

Merman Klinksick reshaped a waterway on his farm about six miles south of Fredericksburg along Meusebach Creek Road to stop ongoing erosion and damage to terrace outlets. He plans Bermuda grass once conditions improve, with several cooperators considering native or Coastal Bermuda and weeping lovegrass. Coastal Bermuda may not seed, so sprigs are needed. weeping lovegrass suits sandy soils and can thrive when planted alone. Bruno Arlitt will plant ten acres to grass this spring on fields damaged by the 1959 flood. Edmund Durst is pleased with last year’s weeping lovegrass near Palo Alto Creek and plans touch ups this spring. E. Huebner, south of Fredericksburg, will plant Coastal Bermuda this spring on an old field and joins the district. Desmond Sagebiel attended the Hill Country Association meeting in Mason on Feb 25 as new officers for the year were elected, with Baze Draper chosen chairman and Robert Kassel vice-chairman. A Fly Gap area ranch row in Mason County showed how range conservation payments benefited the land, while G Bule of Willow City joined as a cooperator and has completed over a mile of terraces and cleared whitebrush with a small dozer.
