Outrageous Lies on an International Stage Explored
Carlton J. Hayes, Columbia history professor and ambassador to Spain, analyzes Allied misrepresentations about Spain in 1944. He notes a Toulouse radio plot promoting uprisings and Franco’s fall, aims to push Maquis into Spain, and cites false reports echoed in London and New York. He warns these lies misled journalists and endangered efforts to resist Nazism. The piece also recalls local notes on hog butcherings and visits in Harper, Texas.
