House approves terminal leave pay reform and wartime draft extension
The House passed a bill to remove unequal terminal leave pay for enlisted men, aligning with officers. Conferees reached a compromise extending selective service until next March, keeping drafts for ages 19 to 44 while ending father deferrals after August 1. The plan fixes army strength at 1,550,000 on July 1 and 1,000,000 on July 1, 1947, with focus on occupation duties and peace settlement leverage. General Eisenhower supported the measures and emphasized replacements and volunteer growth.
