Bretton Woods plan moves to Senate after House approval

The Bretton Woods proposal clears the House 345 to 18 and awaits Senate action. It links with the San Francisco treaty talks to create an International Monetary Stabilization Fund and an International Bank for Reconstruction and Development with a 9 billion capital and a 8.1 billion gold and currency base. Our 28 percent share funds the plan aimed at preventing economic warfare, stabilizing currencies, and financing reconstruction.

Sailors celebrate Mansfield's first birthday aboard destroyer

W S Whitworth, son of Mr and Mrs Walton Whitworth, writes of the USS Mansfield’s first birthday and its wartime duties. Harper FFA Chapter Receives Silver Emblem

The Harper FFA chapter has been selected by the State Department of Vocational Education as one of five in Area Eight to receive the silver emblem. The award recognizes outstanding activities in the 1944 1945 state program of work. All members contributed, and a certificate has been received by the chapter advisor.

Bomber Crewman Observes Devastated Germany During Flight

Master Sergeant Lester L. Coffey of San Antonio flew eight hours over Cologne Essen Frankfurt Eindhoven Brunswick and Kassel in an Eighth Air Force bomber. He serves as technical inspector at a large aerial repair depot in Suffolk aiding B 17 parts for potential operations against Japan. Coffey has been overseas three years and is son of Mrs Annie Mae Bredvad.

Wolf Creek Bridges Under Construction On Fredericksburg Kerrville Route

Work began last Monday on two reinforced concrete bridges over Wolf Creek and Gilespie County near the Fredericksburg Kerrville highway. They cost about 30000 dollars, take four to six months, and will carry 24 foot wide traffic. The Gilespie County span is 245 feet long and 25 feet high, the Kerr County span 125 feet long and 20 feet high. The project employs 13 men with J A Nichols as superintendent. When finished it will improve safety and remove two curves and two low water crossings. The Fredericksburg Kerrville highway was upgraded with asphalt topping a few years ago and remains a fine road in the region.

Harper Area Rodeo and Dance Planned at Stewart's Grove

Residents of Harper and surrounding territory can attend a rodeo and horse races at Stewart's Grove on Saturday June 23. Walter Parker Son sponsor events with 10:00 a.m. horse races, noon mutton barbecue, rodeo events at 2:00 p.m., and a dance after with the Melody Kings of Kerrville. Contestants sign up by noon at Belmore Roberts Barber Shop.

Canning Course Returns at Harper School This Summer

A ten week canning course resumes at Harper school house in the lunch room starting Monday June 18. Mrs. Tommie Harlan and Mrs. Ray Jones supervise with sessions nine to eleven in the morning and two to six in the afternoon, Monday through Friday, to assist local citizens in food production skills.

Heavy rains reported at Junction and surrounding areas

A heavy rain event was logged in the Junction area Monday night with about 6 inches nearby. London saw 2 inches, Menard 1.5, and Harper 0.25 inches, while the Reservation area reported heavier totals and more rain toward Junction. Crops are in good condition between Fredericksburg and Junction, but West Texas west of Junction faces critical conditions as travelers report severe weather.

Tejas Federated Study Club met at the Harper school house on June 16 with Miss Agnes Sagebiel Fredericksburg attorney delivering a review of Born in Paradise by Ar mine von Tempski. The program highlighted harmony among many nations and featured talks on U S literary trends and buying books that fit needs. Harold Boyd Schmidt received the Lone Star Farmer Degree from the State Department of Vocational Education for achievements in three years of F F A work at Harper.

Dorothy Jung daughter of Mr and Mrs Alonzo Jung and Robert Besier son of Mrs Joseph Besier were united in marriage Tuesday at St Anthony’s church Har per Rev James A Daley presided. Attendants were Paul Besier Clara Jenschke and Lester Grona. A dinner followed at Nimitz Hotel then a short honeymoon. Besier, returning from 18 months with the U S 15th Air Force in Italy, will report July 2 to Fort Sam Houston.

Judge Raymond Gray presided on Monday over motions for a new trial in the P C Hicks and wife versus Cheslyan H Frost auto collision case. The court awaits a ruling after arguments by Morris Morris San Antonio and local counsel. A divorce and property partition case Laverta Leutbecher vs Chas Leutbecher was granted with custody to the mother. The Bank of Fredericksburg receivership case closed most assets with remaining encumbered town lots and timber land.

Junction Soldier Sgt Cecil Holekamp Killed On Okinawa

Sgt Cecil Martin Holekamp 20 son of Mr and Mrs C T Holekamp of Junction was reported dead in action on Okinawa April 10 1945. A Bronze Star Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Purple Heart recipient he fought in Leyte's campaign and graduated Junction High School in 1941. He enlisted December 1942 and entered active service June 1943 training in California and Oregon before overseas duty in July 1944.
