Indirect clothing taxes burden Texas shoppers
The National Consumers Tax Commission reports last year indirect taxes buried in apparel store purchases in Texas totaling $7,839,970 for government use. The taxes, paid by shoppers, arise from producers and distributors and amount to about 10 percent of clothing costs. The study, led by Mrs. Mucklestone and backed by Brownsville member Mrs. Volney W. Taylor, covers clothing sales in apparel stores only and cites Census figures showing 1935 Texas apparel store sales at $82,526,600.

Studies on Some Important Pasture Grasses
The Texas Agricultural Experiment Station tracks promising pasture grasses Angleton yellow beard buffalo and bahia. Angleton grass from India shows potential but seed viability varies by climate with seed production being explored. Yellow beard grass from Central Europe and Asia forms dense clumps and promises summer grazing with seed distribution efforts under way. Buffalo grass native to the Great Plains proves heat drought tolerant with seed harvest challenges to raise workable seed crops. Bahia grass from the West Indies and South America is aggressive and persists under heavy grazing though seed viability is low and planting failures occur. seed-bed timing and Gulf Coast adaptation are being studied.
