American Legion Boys State Enrollment Hits All Time High

Austin prepares for the 1971 Boys State on the University of Texas campus with 840 junior boys registered. B. B. Hester, Department Commander, notes the event teaches citizenship through a practical do it yourself government simulation. Delegates register June 5 at Jester Center and form eight named cities with Federalist and Nationalist precincts.

New Books and Theatre Plans Highlight Pioneer Memorial Library

The Pioneer Memorial Library adds titles including Edgar Cayce’s story of Jesus and Plato, plus works on philosophy, psychology, Christianity, and public affairs. The Hall Country Arts Foundation announces the 107 Point Theatre Productions with June to August shows. A federal bill seeks to outlaw racial discrimination in school staffing and busing, urging equality under the Constitution.

Ronnie Bernhard Dies in Auto Crash at 16

Ronnie Lee Bernhard 16 died May 29 in Santa Rosa Hospital San Antonio from head injuries after a car crash May 22 as a passenger with teens. He would have been a St Marys High junior next fall. Survived by parents one sister Marks two brothers James and David and grandparents Mr and Mrs Ben O Fiedler. Funeral services held May 31 at Schaetter Funeral Home and St Marys Church with Pallbearers from the St Marys Indians.

Fish and Wildlife Service expands river pollution monitoring

The Fish and Wildlife Service announced expanded monitoring of waste from five major hatcheries in Utah Arizona Colorado Wyoming and Oklahoma to gauge water quality and pollution risk. Contracts with universities and labs will analyze bacteria oxygen ammonia nitrates and other indices to decide on corrective actions.

A Soviet practice of storing cars on blocks and under wraps during winter is linked to severe winters and garage shortages. Moscow has about 10 public filling stations for 6.7 million residents, with plans to boost production and create a network of stations, motels, and driving schools by 1972.

Hill Country Arts Foundation Opens Summer Season in Ingram

Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram begins its summer season with art and theatre starting June 7. Activities include watercolor classes by Clay McGaughy and oils by Fred Samuelson plus stitching by Mary Heickman. Children's and Junior Workshops run June 7 to 19 and June 8 onward respectively, with theatre by You Cant Take It With You opening June 9 at Point Theatre. Harrison Ewing leads youth instruction. An outdoor Spaghetti Buffet on the Guadalupe River precedes opening night.
