Penny Postcards at Two Cents If Senate Approves Bill

Post office finances hinge on a House bill to raise postcard rates and alter second class mail rules. The plan would add about 130 million dollars yearly in revenue, but still leave a large annual deficit. If Hoover Commission reforms are enacted, the shortfall could shrink notably. The report notes second class mail losses driven by heavy usage for advertising and utilities, with the department losing about 57 million annually on postal cards. A one cent increase would lift revenue by 36 million, leaving a 21 million loss on card handling. The bill does not cut parcel post service to rural routes or small offices.

Texas Farmers Move Against Federal Aid Control

The article notes Texas farmers repaying eight million dollars to the Production Credit Corp and losing tax exemptions, signaling desire to end government subsidies. In Castro and Deaf Smith counties, Posey Cunningham and Curtis Traweek urged local control of farm programs, warning of creeping socialism if policy remains distant from home communities. They pressed for county and precinct level oversight, arguing farmers must neither rely on handouts nor cede land to federal direction. The piece also recounts calls for religious inscription on currency and cites historical context on In God We Trust.
