Harper high school students will take mid term exams next Monday and Tuesday as announced by Supt Neal B Fox. Students will not attend school Thursday and Friday January 12 and 13 while teachers grade papers. Students entered in the stock show on Thursday may attend school that day.
Rainfall in Harper for 1949 reached 32.74 inches with a month by month record highlighting December’s 2.35 inches. The annual Harper boys stock show will be held at the Harper school stock barns next Thursday January 12, with judges Carlos Parker and Hy F Grote and Clint L Brown as superintendent. After the show, exhibitors will move to the Fredericksburg show the next day January 13.
Polio poster children from seven cities form a March of Dimes honor group. They will appeal for greater contributions to sustain patient care, research, and education programs sponsored since 1938 by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
Harper high school boys lose a district game to Boerne 30 to 14 at Comfort gym on Tuesday night. Harper scorers Clark Bierschwabe and Chas Neal have four points each. Star forward Dugress Carter out sick. Mason girls win a doubleheader over Comfort girls. Three games set at Harper gym Friday night with Comfort teams and Harper teams in district action. Next Tuesday Harper to host Stonewall teams in a return.
Abilene Texas reports a three month old girl had all ten fingers gnawed by rats. The mother, Rita Martinez, had left Carmen Martinez alone in the apartment. the child was found bleeding and later hospitalized. A pet mongrel dog was observed licking the wounds. two large rats were later found in the house. The child’s condition improved. Lorenz Wendel and daughters visited Alvin Oehler’s family during the holidays.
The Comfort Future Farmers will host their annual livestock show for 4 H and FFA members at the Comfort School on Saturday January seventh nineteen fifty. Nearly one hundred lambs breeding sheep Angora goats Jersey heifers baby beef swine and capons will be shown by junior exhibitors. Prize money committee has raised one hundred fifty dollars and seeks more donations from local merchants and residents. Judges include Bill Oliver Voc Ag instructor from Tivy High School Kerrville and H L Schimmer Bandera County Ag Agent. The remodeled public square building will house the exhibits with stalls built by Voc Ag shop boys. Local prize winners will advance to district Kerrville county Bvuerne and Southwestern Livestock Shows in San Antonio.
The Junction Exes defeated the Harper All-Stars 26-14 in the Needlegrass Bowl at Junction on New Year’s Day. G. W. Walker scored all four Junction touchdowns, with one conversion, and Schreiner Institute student Walker also contributed two points on a safety. Ray Carter scampered 80 yards for Harper’s first TD, and W. C. Whitworth added a fumble return for a Junction score. Proceeds were split 50 50 for civic projects.
Mrs. W. O. Brown marked her 78th birthday with a family dinner at her Harper home last Thursday, December 29. Family and grandchildren attended. two members and a minor grandchild were away in England. Attendees included Robert Whitewood, Harold Stevens, Edinburg. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kensing. Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Whitewood. Mrs. Ollie Parker. Mr. and Mrs. Edd Walker and son. Mrs. Brown has nine living children, 16 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. A turkey dinner and birthday cake were served to 42 people.
The Hull Country Study Club hosted a New Year’s Eve party at the American Legion Hall for Tejas Study Club members. Pastel decor featured streamers balloons and silver lace. refreshments included sandwiches cake ambrosia hot chocolate and coffee. Games and dancing provided entertainment.
