A year end devotional looks forward to a hopeful new year with prayers for wisdom and compassion. Local gatherings recount Christmas Eve at the Maurer home with North Fontaine and Mincy families, gift exchanges, and festive refreshments.
Harper's annual FFA and 4-H livestock show returns Saturday at the Harper School grounds livestock barn. About 40 swine 10–20 beef cattle 6 poultry 10 goats 20 breeding sheep and 150 fat market lambs will be exhibited with judging at 10 am. Sifford and Sagebiel named as judges. trophies and cash prizes donated by local families and First State Bank. Show organizers praise last year's success and invite community attendance to support youth exhibitors.
Gillespie County officials new and re elected sworn in at the Commissioners Court room on Jan 2 shortly after 9 am. New members include J Marvin Williams Precinct 2 Arthur Lynn Hahn Precinct 4 Doris Lange County Clerk Walter Schmidt District Clerk and four year sheriff and deputy terms. Re elected County Judge Victor Sagebiel and Justice Garland Taylor Precinct 3 County Treasurer Reuben Herbert and County Surveyor Victor L Nixon Jr. Holdovers include Harold Jung Sheriff Hugo Klaerner and other commissioners and attorneys with several terms continuing.
Drilling on the Reuben Tatsch ranch near Harper halted after the drill stem hit a cavern at about 800 feet, with rig removal and new equipment planned. A second well near Junction on the B L Smith ranch produced light gas from 900 feet, while another on James Smith's place yielded strong gas flow at 625 feet. Salt water and soda appeared at 300 feet, with casing and tests planned after the New Year. Nearby wells show continued activity with prospects for more gas drilling next year. Texas exploration reports 261 oil and 328 gas discoveries in 1974, plus 4,886 oil wells completed and 2,430 gas completions, with wildcatters making several new finds in December.
The Central Texas Electric Cooperative faced its worst ice storm of record over Christmas as about 4000 members lost service for up to 96 hours. Crews from Kerrville Fredericksburg Mason and Stonewall areas worked under W C Williams and C M Reith to reestablish transmission lines, replace burned lines and fuses, and repair deteriorated right of way.
