A historical note argues wood is no longer the dominant material as metals and synthetics rise. It challenges the belief that non combustibility equals fire safety, citing The Carpenter which says heat resistance and duration under high temperatures matter more than combustibility.
Miss Opa Eckhardt of San Antonio announces her engagement to Alton Haufler of Comfort. Eckhardt, a Harper High School graduate, IBM supervisor at Fort Sam Houston, has traveled widely and plays softball. Haufler, Comfort High School graduate, Army veteran, diesel and mechanics student, and member of the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, works with Hausler Implement. No wedding plans set.
The New York Academy of Medicine proposed free or low cost narcotics for addicts outside institutions. Javits warned acceptance would be like throwing in the sponge in the fight to cure addicts, while Anslinger called it government propaganda to sell poison. Five witnesses supported the plan at an earlier hearing, aiming to aid employment and normalize lives, but critics fear easy access and government aid would fuel crime and deter rehabilitation efforts.
Mrs. Elsie Walker of Harper was notified that her son A2C Larry Goehmann passed the aviation cadet examinations and will begin training in Texas soon. Goehmann entered service in March 1953 and is currently stationed at Westover Air Force Base Massachusetts.
The Gillespie County Commissioners Court named election judges for Precincts 1 through 22 with presiding and supporting judges listed at each precinct. Special election judges were named to handle absentee votes while other fiscal actions included fund transfers and officer reappointments.
A dated quip about calling a boyfriend Pilgrim is followed by a reminder to speak kindly of a wife and note her enjoyment of candy and flowers. An unrelated line estimates 335 million homes use gas for cooking in residences. The District of Columbia is named in honor of Columbus.
The Farmer Boys League reorganized for the 1956 baseball season with five teams present Harper Kerrville Fredericksburg Texans Stonewall and Listerdale. Doss plans to return Comfort remains doubtful. Officers will be elected and the schedule adopted at Peter's Hall March 1. Kerrville joins as a new member.
The Harper Parent-Teacher Association will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday March 1 at the school Mrs Victor Marshall will lead Inspiration time The program titled The Family and School Create Skilled Hands includes a dress revue by the Home Economics Department and a vocational agriculture segment The executive committee meets at 2 30 p.m. before the regular meeting
Seguin Texas Lutheran College announces first semester honor roll with 45 students in high honors Jo Ann Spaeth a senior from Harper is listed among the honorees.
Mrs. Clayton Kneese hosted a turkey dinner Sunday night to honor her husband on his birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Armand Crenwelge and son of Fredericksburg, Mr. and Mrs. Orvin Behrens and children, Mr. and Mrs. Maxie Baumann and children, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Ellebracht and daughter, Miss Elaine, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Kneese and sons, and Mrs. Ida Kneese.
A gift tea was held at the home of Mrs Harold Schmidt on Friday February 18 honoring the former Lenore Wehrs of Kerrville a recent bride of Elbert Schmidt of Harper. Guests included Mrs Helen Wehrs of Kerrville and hostesses Mrs David Schmidt and Mrs Harold Schmidt. The couple now reside in Austin where Schmidt pursues pre medical studies at the University of Texas.
Attendees at the Smith Funeral Home and Sunset Cemetery services included Mr and Mrs Herman Oehler Mr and Mrs J B Mayhugh Mr and Mrs Earl Benner Mr and Mrs Lee Goff and Rev Jesse Long who assisted with the ceremony Monday afternoon.
Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Whetstone included Mr. and Mrs. E R Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Brown of Junction, and Mr. and Mrs Tom Whetstone with their young daughter.
Mr and Mrs Jack Jones and their children from Rocksprings spent Sunday afternoon in Harper while traveling from San Antonio. They had attended the livestock exposition there on Saturday.
Mr and Mrs Pete Badhge of Kingsville and daughter Mrs Lot heroe Milles along with two grandchildren are listed in a local obituary notice for a family bereavement. The fragment confirms surviving relatives and kin names in a cautious, non-graphic notice.
The Harper 4-H Club will host Dr. Paul Phillips Jr. at the Harper Youth Center from 1 to 5 30 pm next Tuesday for dog vaccinations. About 36 dogs were treated this week far below the usual 80 to 100. residents are urged to bring their dogs. Fees are 150 for small dogs and 200 for large dogs. Coffee and sweets will be sold during the afternoon.
The Presbyterian Women’s Society met at the manse on February 16 with 10 members and guests. Mildred Kimm from the Board of Christian Education spoke on Sunday School in small churches and showed a film titled When They Are In Kindergarten. Gilbert Anderegg and Arthur Bierschwale attended. refreshments were served. next meeting is in March.
Roger Harper and Sgt. Clarence Marcental were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Harper for a barbecue supper Saturday night.
Mr and Mrs Carol Cottle and their children of Rocksprings visited relatives in Harper on Monday while traveling home from Fredericksburg.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Bauerle and Mr and Mrs Arnold Immke of Cullom Illinois visited Mr Bauerle s sister Mrs Paul J Schwab and Dr Schwab in San Antonio. They accompanied the Schwabs to Harper Sunday for services at the Presbyterian Church.
The Texas New Mexico Pipeline pumping station at Tivydale reopened last week with seven workers led by chief engineer Hubert Cox. The facility operates 24 hours pumping about 57 000 barrels daily from West Texas and New Mexico fields to Houston refineries, with two large pumps and desanding engines active and a third unit soon to start.
District Judge Weatherby voided the entire jury panel after Hugo Weinheimer challenged the panel’s validity citing an unauthorized Jury Commission and conflicts of interest involving Troy Foster and Glenn Hopf. A new panel was appointed and trial set for April 9, 1956, with Weatherby’s impartiality later questioned by Weinheimer’s attorney.

The Texas Supreme Court refused to hear Central Texas Electric Cooperative Inc. v. Arthur Stehling. The San Antonio Court of Civil Appeals ordered transfer of papers from Gillespie County District Clerk to Bexar County District Court and affirmed the lower judgment with costs taxed.
Mrs Jacy Tobin hosted relatives including Mr and Mrs Marvin Tobin of San Antonio and Mr and Mrs Hardin Tobin of Rocksprings along with Roy Roberts and his daughter Beverly for a Sunday visit.
The University of Texas Board of Regents announced plans to issue prospecting and leasing permits for minerals other than oil gas sulphur and potash on West Texas endowment lands of the Permanent University Fund. A bulletin outlining procedures and requirements will be published about April 1 and available from the geologist in charge of University lands in Midland. No applications for permits or leases will be accepted before the bulletin and before July 1.
The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants is assembling a nationwide picture of the financial status of the 1400 state chartered insurance companies now under way in major Texas cities. The project is for the state board of insurance commission with a deadline of May 30.
