New York Academy proposal to provide narcotics faces Senate attack

The New York Academy of Medicine proposed free or low cost narcotics for addicts outside institutions. Javits warned acceptance would be like throwing in the sponge in the fight to cure addicts, while Anslinger called it government propaganda to sell poison. Five witnesses supported the plan at an earlier hearing, aiming to aid employment and normalize lives, but critics fear easy access and government aid would fuel crime and deter rehabilitation efforts.

Election Judges Named By Gillespie County Commissioners Court

The Gillespie County Commissioners Court named election judges for Precincts 1 through 22 with presiding and supporting judges listed at each precinct. Special election judges were named to handle absentee votes while other fiscal actions included fund transfers and officer reappointments.

The Farmer Boys League reorganized for the 1956 baseball season with five teams present Harper Kerrville Fredericksburg Texans Stonewall and Listerdale. Doss plans to return Comfort remains doubtful. Officers will be elected and the schedule adopted at Peter's Hall March 1. Kerrville joins as a new member.

Vaccination Clinic For Dogs In Harper Next Tuesday

The Harper 4-H Club will host Dr. Paul Phillips Jr. at the Harper Youth Center from 1 to 5 30 pm next Tuesday for dog vaccinations. About 36 dogs were treated this week far below the usual 80 to 100. residents are urged to bring their dogs. Fees are 150 for small dogs and 200 for large dogs. Coffee and sweets will be sold during the afternoon.

The Presbyterian Women’s Society met at the manse on February 16 with 10 members and guests. Tivydale pumping station resumes operations after years idle

The Texas New Mexico Pipeline pumping station at Tivydale reopened last week with seven workers led by chief engineer Hubert Cox. The facility operates 24 hours pumping about 57 000 barrels daily from West Texas and New Mexico fields to Houston refineries, with two large pumps and desanding engines active and a third unit soon to start.

Prospecting Permits To Be Issued By Texas University

The University of Texas Board of Regents announced plans to issue prospecting and leasing permits for minerals other than oil gas sulphur and potash on West Texas endowment lands of the Permanent University Fund. A bulletin outlining procedures and requirements will be published about April 1 and available from the geologist in charge of University lands in Midland. No applications for permits or leases will be accepted before the bulletin and before July 1.
