Austin report shows Texas boards classified 303,059 registrants in 1949 with 24,354 placed 1-A. End-year totals reach 524,900 registered and 359,908 classified, including 49,065 in 1-A. Four hundred thirty four Texas registrants were inducted in 1949, and 1,481 men were sent for armed forces physicals.
A Jewish Washington, D. C., businessman funds $1,000 yearly scholarships for three years to two Chinese men preparing for Methodist ministry in China. The gift follows Rev. J. Harry Haines of Chungking China. Also noted are updates on leprosy programs, missionary work, and church activity in the Philippines and the United States.
In January 1949 examinations were last authorized by Col Wakefield except by local board medical advisors. Texas local boards classified 5 175 registrants as enlisting in the armed forces during the past year and 5 785 men were classified as enlisting by the end of 1949, with 610 enlisting by the end of 1948. Selective office hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm.
