Mexico foot and mouth eradication program records collapse
Last week committees from the House and Senate reviewed the eradication program for foot and mouth disease in Mexico. The Mexican government halted all slaughtering after public opposition, with about half a million cattle and hogs destroyed. The United States covered $36 million of costs and a quarantine remains around the infected zone while future joint slaughtering depends on talks between the two governments. The border will stay closed to live cattle and other livestock until further notice.
