Origins of America the Beautiful on Pike's Peak
The hymn originated on Pike's Peak when Katharine Lee Bates, a Wellesley English professor, drafted the opening lines after visiting the Columbian Exposition. Written that evening in Colorado Springs, the full poem exalted national peace and goodwill.
