First conviction in veterans land program indictments stated
Bascom Giles, founder of the program, received a three year penitentiary sentence from a 98th district court jury for aiding and abetting Brady land dealer B. R. Sheffield in a $6,800 theft connected to Kinney County Rosenaw Ranch sales to veterans. Giles plans to appeal after a quick motion denial and awaits trial again in San Antonio on another bribery charge. The state also recovered $89,868 in a civil suit against Byrd Cattle Co. over a Dimmit County land sale to veterans.
