Alabama to issue 6 cent sesquicentennial stamp

Postmaster General Blount unveils the Alabama commemorative stamp design in Montgomery. The 6 cent issue, dated 1819 to 1969, features the camellia and yellowhammer and will be issued August 2 in Huntsville. Bernice Kochan, a Cleveland artist, designed the stamp, the second woman to design two U S stamps in one year.

6 cents stamp honors Powell with August 1 issue

A 6 cent postage stamp featuring Major Powell guiding a Colorado River voyage will be issued August 1 with first day ceremonies at Page Arizona near Powell Lake. The design by Rudolph Wendelin depicts Powell at the tiller of the lead boat and bears the 1869 expedition and 6 cents U S Postage markings.

West Texas Chamber urges tax plan shift to sales tax changes

The West Texas Chamber of Commerce May 18 supported raising state revenues in the 61st Legislature by eliminating some sales tax exemptions or lifting current tax rates. The resolution, approved July 18, notes Texas business pays 50.5 percent of state taxes and warns higher taxes would curb industrial growth and raise prices. It calls the governor and lawmakers to act.

Final Rites for Mrs Bertha Juenke

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Amelia Juenke 88 of 1121 North St were held at Notre Dame Church with Rev Joseph Deane officiating and burial at Harper Cemetery. Rosary was recited the night before at Plummer Fair Chapel. Kerrville native died Sunday in a Fredericksburg nursing home and is survived by a daughter Guy McKee two sons Ervy and Harvey Juenke three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Pallbearers included Clemens Maurer Belton Tatsch Raymond Feler Elbert Feller and Max Baumann.

Cosper and Cottle Family Reunion Held Sunday

The fifth annual Cosper and Cottle Reunion was held at Harper Community Park on Sunday July 27 with about 80 attendees. Rev Maney Fairchild gave grace before a basket lunch and prizes in the guessing game were won by Nancy Brown Kathryn Cottle William Sellers Kay Lucas and Ruth Russell. West Texas Chamber Approves Nine Constitutional Amendments Plan

The West Texas Chamber of Commerce and regional chamber committees back nine amendments to the Texas Constitution including water bonds salary hikes for lawmakers and increased student loan funds. Amendments 1 4 and 5 were not acted on while Amendment 9 seeking annual legislative sessions drew opposition. Voters will decide on August 5.
