Tobacco farming: skill and economic lift across states

An analysis of tobacco farming highlights the personal skill of growers, the long hours required per acre, and the strong economic impact of tobacco nationwide. It notes about 7,800 plants per acre and 495 man-hours to raise a single acre, plus the curing process that seals flavor and raises auction prices. The program links tobacco to 16 states, with a billion-dollar annual value for 750,000 farming families and its status as the fourth largest U S crop after wheat, cotton, and corn.
