Cooperative cuts erosion with coastal bermuda pasture plan
Jim Doyle on a ranch 20 miles north of Fredericksburg joins Gillespie County Soil Conservation District to develop a soil and water plan. He will retire an old sandy field to permanent grass this spring and plant coastal bermuda for a tame pasture with fertilization weed control and rotation grazing to reduce summer grazing pressure. Diversion terraces built by Earl Brehmer protect cropland from outside water and new coastal bermuda needs careful establishment with moisture management and weed control. Fertilizer based on soil tests plus a June nitrogen top dress will feed the grass and promote a dense stand 5 to 6 inches tall for extended grazing and better yields.
