Public wage boost debate over steelworkers raise
A Wage Stabilization Board proposal would lift steelworkers’ average pay to $2 per hour with added benefits and a scheduled rise by 18 cents this year and 8 cents next year. The plan includes a forced union shop and could raise prices across the economy, reducing purchasing power and tax receipts. Opposition cites government involvement and potential strikes led by Phil Murray and John L. Lewis.
