Harlan Community welcomes the public to open houses tomorrow night. New Park and West Ridge elementary schools will be open from 7 to 8 30 p.m. The middle school hours are 7 30 to 9 p.m.
Yukari Kureyama from Sakai Japan is living with the Marvin and Carole Schroeder family while attending Walnut Community High School. The Schroders, with four daughters, host through AFS International, a nonprofit exchange program linking U.S. families with students from 70-plus countries for year or summer stays.
Representatives for Congressman Jim Lightfoot and challenger Scott Hughes have approved debate rules covering technical aspects and joint appearances. As of Sept 1 both campaigns agreed to two debates with a third possible. first Sept 19 at 7 30 p m at Iowa Western Community College sponsored by the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce. second Oct 11 in Osceola as part of an Iowa Public Television broadcast series. Rainbow of Fashions will open at 515 Court, Harlan, effective Monday September 15. Nancy's Nook will also open September 15 at the same address with Nancy Klein operating sewing services. Henry's Auto Repair by Henry Scheffler is now open at 1702 Exchange St, Harlan.
Harlan district court urged to replace deferred judgment with verdict of guilty or not guilty in the first degree theft case against Gloria Miner, 38, tied to $9,939.10 in school funds. School officials argue for a final decision now, noting Miner pleaded not guilty and waived jury trial earlier.
IRWIN The Greenridge Steam and Gas Antique Show celebrates its tenth anniversary on Sept 20 and 21 on a farm near Irwin. The two day event features hay rides, demonstrations, antique machinery, crafts, contests, parades, and a country music show with admission 2.50 for adults. Ralph Kruger, 90, Portsmouth, died Sept 8 at Bishop Bergan Hospital, Omaha.
Nearly 2,000 spectators attended the Carstens Memorial Farm Days near Shelby on Sunday after rain dampened Saturday. The event, co sponsored by the Good Neighbors Group and the Pottawattamie County Historical Society, featured a 100 year old saw mill powered by a 1919 Advance Runnely steam engine, plus threshing, shelling, lumbering, and craft demonstrations.
Harlan welcomes Molded Products a new plastics maker aiming to grow from six to about 30 workers in 18 months to two years with potential extra federal orders. The California transplant team led by manager Harlow Herning will expand production including tube nuts for farm equipment and dialysis protective devices while planning around the clock shifts if government contracts materialize. The company opened with 250 visitors at a weekend open house and notes strong local metalworking talent as a key asset for future expansion.
Jeron Henscheid of Westphalia serves on the southwest Iowa PLUS task force aiding literacy efforts. The project, a joint ABC and PBS campaign, seeks volunteers and community involvement to raise awareness and match learners with tutors across Shelby County and beyond.
