Defiance transfers revenue sharing funds to sewer reserve
The City of Defiance moved over 10 000 dollars from its revenue sharing savings to the sewer reserve fund. The council approved the transfer of 10 636 58 currently allocated as of Oct 1 and heard a plan from Iowa Public Service to relocate about 20 street lights with action delayed until a test light near St Peters Community Hall is installed. The meeting also discussed fostering new business, approved a Class C liquor license for St Peters Hall, and set Halloween trick or treat for Oct 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Firefighters responded to a Sunday morning blaze at the Jim Winchell residence southeast of Harlan. The south side and roof were fully involved on arrival, but control was achieved in ten minutes. No injuries were reported and damage was limited to one room and roof with smoke damage throughout. The call drew 20 firefighters, three vehicles, and Medivac personnel.
