Harlan Community Schools will dismiss one hour early today Wednesday for Thanksgiving vacation. No classes will be held Thursday and Friday as students observe the break.
Iowa Public Television will broadcast the 1985 All-State Music Festival from Hilton Coliseum Ames. The All-State Band Orchestra and Choir performed Nov. 17 with an IPT crew recording. Three half hour programs titled 1985 All-State Music Festival Before the Downbeat air Wednesdays Dec 4 11 and 18 at 11 30 a.m.
Mrs. Vernon Buschkamp of Harlan won $500 in the Iowa Lottery. She reported buying the winning ticket at the Harlan Hy-Vee store.
The Iowa Department of Transportation offers gift certificates for personalized license plates at $25 with a money back guarantee if the plate is taken or the recipient rejects the gift. Order forms available by mail, phone, or at county treasurer offices. Plates arrive before vehicle registration. future plate changes may require extra fee.
Students charm their grandparents with skits and music at Grandparents Day last week at Rosman Parish Center. Fourth graders performed while photographed segments name Alan Schmitz Sherry Musich Erin Tremel Joey Hulsebus along with Walter Carter Travis Rust Kirk Graeve and Carrie Salvo with fathers’ names in parentheses.
Harlan Community School Board and HEA near settlement for the 1986 87 teachers contract. HEA asked 14950 base pay, board offered 14225, about a 3.99 percent raise and total district growth of 86689. Agreement on salaries but dispute over extra curricular evening duty. board offered a $10000 life insurance increase. Contract near finalization after last year’s December talks.
Shelby County Attorney Dan Murtaugh said a grand jury may be called as part of a probe into irregularities in Harlan Community School District finances for 1984 85. He indicated the prosecution is nearing a conclusion with no charges filed yet.
David Stanley of Muscatine president of Iowans for Tax Relief urged a constitutional tax and spending limit at a Shelby County taxpayers dinner. He said federal state and local governments take 45 cents of every dollar and proposed amendments to the U.S. and Iowa constitutions to curb taxes, with balanced budgets and a Taxpayers' Rights Amendment. An audit of Harlan Community School District showed a general fund of 4.911 million ending June 30 1985 with a 24 765 deficit. revenues 2.446 million local tax 2.238 million state aid and 147 44 thousand federal funds. An examination of clearing accounts and school nutrition funds was requested.
Elk Horn and Kimballton host Julefest 85 this weekend with Santa at the Windmill from noon to 3 each day. Danish crafts, food, and gift shops in 17 locations plus demonstrations, exhibits, and a Teddy Bear show highlight the celebration. A country show at Harlan High School featured Songbusters and Melody-in-Motion with a 650-strong audience before a Des Moines appearance for the Iowa Grain and Feed Association show.
In Harlan the Christmas season kicks off Friday with extended store hours and Santa sightings in the downtown area. Santa's Workshop will run Saturdays and Sundays 2 to 4 pm, with additional weekday hours through December 23. The Win a Million in Harlan giveaway continues, with weekly prizes and a final draw December 19, as thousands of registration slips pour in from more than 50 participating businesses.
