Veterans Memorial Auditorium marks 20th anniversary in Harlan
A celebration Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of Harlan's Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Since its 1966 dedication as the Liberty Memorial Building the city owned venue has hosted dances meetings banquets auto shows health fairs and many community events. The venue averages 68 to 78 hours of weekly activity and hosts over 70 outside events annually including a 1 000 dancer polka festival and quarterly bloodmobiles funded partly by property taxes with net income from special events around 33 309 in FY 1985 86.

At the Shelby Kiwanis Club charter night held Saturday November 15 the Harlan Kiwanis Club challenged Shelby to charter another Kiwanis in a new town within two years. Eight Harlan members received New Club Building Awards as about 100 attendees celebrated the Shelby club’s charter with gifts, recognition, and a formal welcome by Shelby officials.

Mural Contest At School To Feature Veterans Event
A 90 minute program begins at 7 p.m. with a veteran themed event hosted by VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Legion Ladies. Mike Mohr of the Marine Corps will MC, followed by high school pep band music. Students will submit 1 ft by 4 ft murals, judged Tuesday Nov 18, with work starting after the winner is picked.

Harlan FFA Takes 11th at National Parliamentary Law Contest
Harlan Com finished eleventh among eighteen teams at the National Parliamentary Law Contest in Carthage Missouri with three substitutes and one first appearance by Harlan FFA. The delegation later attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City where the chapter earned national superior status and a safety award, while four freshmen joined the trip and advisor Levien prepared for a national convention in Dallas.
