HCHS Wins Scholarships At Northern Iowa Symposium

Harlan Community High School earned three scholarships at the Math and Science Symposium at the University of Northern Iowa. Winners include four and three year math scholarships for Lynn Cairney and Nancy Goeser, a four year chemistry scholarship for Don Klitgaard, and an alternate biology scholarship for Lynn Schmitz. Pep rally and welcome home events for Cyclone Domebusters

Harlan Chamber of Commerce schedules a pep rally Friday at 8 30 a.m. in the high school gym to cheer UNI Dome bound Harlan Community High School football team. A welcome home ceremony Sunday at 1 p m in the same gym will feature remarks by mayors, chamber and school officials and others with refreshments afterward.

Irwin Health Fair Set At Manning General Building

IRWIN A spokeswoman announced a Community Health Fair will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Tuesday November 19 at the Irwin Building. Biochemical laboratory testing includes four tests with a blood specimen drawn from the arm. Medical professionals advise 12 to 16 hours of fasting for best results.

November deer accidents cited as most dangerous month

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports November as the riskiest month for vehicle deer crashes. In the first six days of November three people were killed in such accidents. Officials note deer move more during mating season and after crop harvest, often prompting deer to cross roads near deer crossing signs. The heaviest risk occurs from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Deaths Dorothy M. Boettger 67 in Harlan

Dorothy M. Boettger 67 of Harlan died at home on Thursday November 7. She was a resident of Harlan and her passing was reported in local notices. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Harlan Community Middle School earns praise from NCA visitation team

The North Central Association praised Harlan Community Middle School for its on site evaluation process and strong education system. Principal Loyal Moore said the team voiced optimism about facilities and programs during their visit. Western Iowa Arts Association plans The Tender Trap at Harlan Golf and Country Club in February 1986 with four men and four women needed for casting.

Five enter five win in Community Betterment event

AMES Iowa Gov Terry Branstad presented plaques and cash prizes at the 15th annual Iowa Community Betterment Recognition Day. Harlan won first place in the community betterment booth division and Manilla won first in population 860-1560. Panama was an honorable mention in the 10 225 category. Cash awards ranged from 500 to 50 dollars. 134 Iowa towns participated, up ten from a year ago.

Harlan and area clubs showcase centennial projects and awards

Donations and centennial proceeds funded programs and refreshments while club members logged 1,060 miles on 34 rides from January to October. Huff N Puffers members aided the Harlan booth in Ames alongside residents like Kobold Oldenburg and Steve Lawson. Newtown-Avoca Society won third in population 1,600-2,300 for restoring an octagon shelter at Graceland Cemetery, a project funded by bake sales and art placemats.

HCHS Yearbook Wins State Awards in 1984 85

Harlan Community High School’s 1984 85 yearbook earned seven awards in fall Iowa High School Press Association contests. In Class C, two second place finishers were recognized for Organizations Copy and Theme Development, with multiple honorable mentions across design student life and advertising topics. Additional honors went to AvoHa in Class A for Special Features Photography. Logan Magnolia’s 1985 yearbook also won four awards in Class A including first in Organizations Copy. Souvenirs drew crowd at the 15th Iowa Community Betterment Day hosted by the Iowa Development Commission and Gov. Branstad. Harlan’s Ames delegation and booth crew attended the football playoff in Webster City.
