Walnut opera house sold to country music group
The National Traditional Country Music Association bought Walnut's aging three story Main St. opera house to create the Old Time Opry Showhouse. Plans include a pioneer music museum, a Mid America Fiddlers Hall of Fame, and an Iowa Country Music Hall of Fame with regular Saturday night dinner shows. The project aims to revitalize Walnut, boost tourism, and seek grants and contributions, opening spring 1988.

Vets Day Parade Planned in Harlan With 18 Units
Veterans Day events in Harlan include an 18 unit parade Tuesday at 10 a.m. starting Sixth and Victoria, tracing a route through Court Fifth Market and Seventh streets to Harlan Community Middle School. Parade marshal is Curt Bladk. A Veterans Day breakfast 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion building supports the Iowa Special Olympics fund.

Space Camp dreams become reality for Jenny Huebert
Jenny Huebert, a Harlan Community Schools sophomore, won a Space Camp essay contest and attended the 1986 NASA Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama with tuition funded by the Harlan Lions Club. She later spoke at NASA Day at HCHS and shared experiences from Shuttle Operations to Mission-One activities. Huebert plans law studies at Harvard and promotes STEM in clubs, with connections to Marian High School in Omaha.
