Library film moved to June 26

A 20 minute filmstrip on the Statue of Liberty will be shown Thursday June 26 at 7 30 p.m. at the Harlan Community Library. The showing is open to the public at no charge. It was postponed from June 19 due to a public educational meeting Eye Changes in Diabetes sponsored by Myrrle Memorial Hospital at 7 30 p.m. in the same library.

Shelby County Nonfarm Labor Force Sees April Drop in Unemployment

Job Service of Iowa figures show Shelby County's April labor force at 6,450 with 310 unemployed and an unemployment rate of 4.9 percent, down from March when the labor force reached 6,340 with 380 unemployed and a 6.0 percent rate. The April employed total stood at 6,130 versus 5,960 in March.

County warns of scam after near fraud attempt on interstate

Shelby County Sheriff Gene Cavenaugh issued a countywide alert after a Harlan woman reported accepting a collect call claiming a relative had car trouble on Interstate 80 and urging a rapid wire transfer. She rejected the request, and Cavenaugh urged residents to watch for similar schemes and report suspicious activity. In racing news, Steve Schurke won the Enduro 200 at Shelby County Speedway in Harlan on June 15, with Joe Julian second and Gene Pauley, Buck Vokt, Gary Madden, and Bob Norgaard following. attendance was about 2000-2500. Weather limits fly-ins at Harlan Flight Breakfast

Adverse conditions reduced the number of fly-ins at Harlan's annual Flight Breakfast on Sunday. About 500 breakfasts were served with over 90 percent arrivals by car. Only 13 planes flew in during fog and rain at Rushenberg Field, though rides began around 10:30 a.m. for roughly 100 spectators. Eight-Ball Aviation Club pilots listed include Randy Pash and Leo Voggesser. Local support acknowledged. next winter's planned fly-in aims to build on the event.

Pageant Symphony joins Avoca Expo in Pioneer Festival

Avoca hosts the 11th Old-Time Country Music Contest and Pioneer Expo August 29 to September 1 at the Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds. A $5,000 Homecoming 86 grant funds the Pageant Symphony of Pioneer Music and Folklore with 250 participants in a five hour show tracing Iowa’s pioneer era. International acts include Styllix from France, Ben Steneker of the Netherlands, Migo Svoboda of Czechoslovakia, and others as part of a festival drawing over 30 000 attendees and 150 exhibitors.
