The Harlan Community Library now opens six extra hours per week effective Monday January 6. The new schedule runs 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, 30 minutes earlier and later than before.
The Earling Business Club will host a free pancake and sausage breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Sunday January 12 at St Josephs Parish Hall Earling as thanks to local customers. The first 500 attendees will receive a free Iowa Lottery ticket.
Harlan spokeswoman Sue Kobold announced the Youth Center will open within ten days in the Laurel School basement rooms in the north section. A 6:30 p.m. work night tonight aims to clean the space and move equipment, with one room for music and the other as a game room. Helpers are welcome as furniture and gear are awaited.

Gertrude T. Duke, 76, former Harlan resident, died Saturday January 4 at Immanuel Village Retirement Center in Omaha. Linda L. Walter, 81, of Walnut, died Saturday January 4 at Myrrle Memorial Hospital in Marian.
Investigators urge tips on who set fire to the Church of Christ on Ninth and Baldwin in Harlan. A $5,000 reward offered via the Iowa Arson Hotline for information leading to an arrest, with anonymity available. Two juveniles were charged in a December arson at the Shelby County Recycling Center. The church plans relocation to 805 8th St served by Leonard Payton. The damaged building is viewed as a total loss.
More than 800 people from across the United States and Canada have become charter members of the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn Iowa. Founders will be recognized in future lists and dues fund operating costs during planning. Membership drives began in March with meetings in Elk Horn Harlan Atlantic Audubon and Ames.
The Shelby County Ambulance Commission was formed to oversee financing and quality of county paramedic service. Myrrle Memorial Hospital Administrator Eugene Leblond was elected chairman with Gary Erbes M.D. as vice chairman and Terry Cox as secretary. The commission funds about 152 thousand dollars yearly, with one third from each City of Harlan, Shelby County, and Myrrle Memorial.
Matthew Mark Bruck, born at Myrrle Memorial Hospital on Jan 2, 1986 at 6 p m, joins siblings Jeremy five Michael three and Rebecca nearly two in Harlan. Wayne and Brenda Bruck win a string of prizes including a 5 million dollars in savings, gold baby ring, multiple gift certificates and free services from local merchants and studios.

Harlan police charged 13 and 14 year old boys with second degree arson after a December 26 1985 fire at the Shelby County Recycling Center damaged a pole building used for newspapers and store of aluminum. Estimated 40 tons of newspapers valued at 25 per ton were lost. Building owned by the Harlan Kiwanis Club, which may reconsider recycling operations.
