Acting Commissioner Paul F. Carlson urged the public to discard all Tylenol capsules and remove them from shelves and medicine cabinets until further notice. A New York woman died after taking two capsules containing potassium cyanide, and a second poisoned bottle was found near the purchase market. Investigators reported no new leads.
Neil Ohms of rural Harlan was elected president of the Shelby County Pork Producers this week. He succeeds Roger Ahrenholtz of rural Manilla, who completed a one year term.
About 30 attendees welcomed three Iowa legislators at the Harlan Chamber of Commerce breakfast. Senate Majority Leader Bill Hutchins and Reps. Louis Muhlbauer and Wendell Pellett spoke and answered questions from the floor. Report in the Feb 22 Weekender edition.
Woodbine's preliminary budget for 1986 87 designates funds for youth programs. Donna Hammitt of Woodbine Parents Against Substance Abuse asks the council to set aside ten percent of liquor tax revenue for youth activities, with a proposed $850 allocation. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for March 6 at 7 p.m.
The Avoca Town and Country Junior Federated Club sponsors a Children’s Finger Printing Clinic today and tomorrow February 19 20 at Avoca Preschool and Day Care Center and Avoca Elementary School. At the elementary school the clinic runs at 10 a.m. both days with setup at 12:30 p.m. today to finger print preschoolers. The preschool center clinic starts at 9 a.m. on both days.
Lillie Wasser, 89, resident of Baptist Memorial Home in Avoca and former Harlan area resident, died February 17 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. Frances L. Owen, 79, of Harlan, died February 16 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.
Walnut resident James E. Suhr agreed to a 750 civil penalty and a cease and desist order from the U S Department of Agriculture to settle federal charges of operating as a livestock dealer without a bond. USDA officials noted Suhr filed the required 30000 and did not admit or deny the charges under the Packers and Stockyards Act.
Shelby County Crimestoppers will stage a bowling tournament March 23 with Family Bowl in Harlan to bolster a strained treasury. Open to those 18 and older, with $50 prizes for high games in men and women divisions and best series awards. entry covers three games plus shoe rental extra. Lucile Pauley becomes Elm Crest Retirement Apartments first resident amid steady occupancy. The 22 unit complex part of Baptist Memorial Home, built for independent living with security and nurse surveillance, covers 21 188 square feet with a 4920 square foot garage and breezeway. The two payment plans offer incentives including substantial entrance fee returns under Plan I and higher monthly fees under Plan II to fund capital needs. Ground was broken July 20 1985 with completion targeted for April 1.
Publicity chairwoman Bernie Donlin announced Monday that the Feb 20 show is cancelled and the opening night moved to Friday Feb 21. Remaining performances run Feb 21, 22, 27, 28 and March 1.
Shelby County Extension Service presents a seminar on nitrogen management in challenging environments on February 26 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Shelby County State Bank in Harlan. Duane Feltz notes nitrogen efficiency is key to fertility plans. ISU Extension soil fertility specialist Randy Killorn will explain nitrogen fate, environmental impacts on activity, and implications for management and current recommendations. Marco Buske will cover economics, yield goals, and nitrogen response.
Western Iowa Arts Association prepares a five night dinner theatre at Harlan Golf and Country Club for The Tender Trap. Randy Greer directs eight actors with a four nights a week rehearsal schedule, featuring Melody-in-Motion pre show. Cast includes Tim Klein Jeff Clothier Dede Petersen Jodi Holloway and others with about 30 behind the scenes volunteers. Tickets are $12.50 and available at the Harlan Chamber of Commerce.
