Official observer Bob Sorensen reports Harlan saw 0.03 inches of precipitation and 0.6 inches of snow in January. Temperatures varied from 61 on January 13 to minus 10 on January 23, with 25 of 31 days above freezing. The month ended with a 57 degree high on January 31, and recent days reached 59 and 55 degrees.
Tivoli Talent Search I starts Saturday February 7 at Elk Horn Lutheran Church basement. Top two entertainers win cash prizes and earn spots at the Tivoli Fest Banquet and Coronation in May. The contest continues in March and April with a small admission charge and lunch. Tivoli Fest honors Danish heritage with music, dance, foods, quilt show, parade, and crafts May 23-24.
Myrrle Memorial Hospital and Shelby County Extension Service sponsor a free workshop on Agricultural Emergencies and Farm Safety on February 10 at 7 p.m. in the Harlan National Bank community room with a snow date February 17. EMTs earn three hours CE, guest speaker Michael Smith of Mercy Hospital Medical Center Des Moines, ISU Extension safety materials available, contact Nancy Boettger at 755-5161 for details.

At the Shelby County Pork Producers winter banquet in Harlan on February 2, Boettger Dave Boettger a pork producer from southwest of Harlan received the 1987 Pork Producer of the Year plaque. The awards program also named Kimballton Auction as Associate Member of the Year Betty Reinig Panama Hog Wild Award to Bob Konz Shelby Donna Peters Porkette Rookie of the Year Lori Ohms Hog Show Trophy to Lori Ohms and Francis Heese Earling District Five Hog Wild Award. Five men were elected unanimously to the county park producers board of directors covering Northwest Northeast Southwest and Southeast districts. About 580 people attended at Veterans Memorial Auditorium for the banquet and 60 minutes of entertainment from the Martin Family Show with photos to appear in the Feb 7 Harlan News Advertiser.
Dr Don Jacobi of Harlan was named 1987 Harlan Citizen of the Year five days after being elected vice president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. The awards banquet drew over 160 people at the Harlan Golf and Country Club and honored several other individuals and organizations for community service and leadership.
A long list of Shelby County pork producers received honors at the 1987 Harlan Citizen of the Year banquet. Recipients include Hog Wild awardees Bob Konz and Francis Heese along with Betty Reinig and Donna Peters for community service, with district and county titles awarded for hog shows, promotions, and queen contests.
